What driving habits might keep you safe this winter?

It will not be long before the roads across New York State are dusted with frost, with the occasional snowfall blanketing the ground. You might enjoy the picturesque beauty of fresh snow, but slippery roads are anything but pretty. You might not be able to prevent the poor driving habits of other people, but your own actions may help to keep you and others safe on the roads this winter.

According to Esurance, numerous winter hazards await drivers in northern states. These include snow, rain, fog, slush and ice. Black ice is particularly deadly. You might encounter a patch of black ice and think it is merely wet pavement, or you could miss it entirely. However, it is extremely slick, and you can find yourself spinning out before you realize you drove over an icy patch.

When driving in adverse weather conditions, it is essential to adjust your driving accordingly. One of the most important things is to reduce your speed. You will also want to give other vehicles more space than usual, so they can stop, change lanes or maneuver safely in slippery conditions. When encountering water or ice on the road, do not brake suddenly if you begin to lose control. Instead, remove your foot from the accelerator, remain calm and carefully begin to brake. You may also consider changing to all-weather or snow tires during the worst of the winter season. However, it is important to remember that these tires do not ensure non-skid treads; rather, they improve your traction with cautious driving.

It is important to understand safe ways to drive in the winter. Adopting good driving habits in adverse weather may not only keep you from being injured, but help you avoid legal action.
